 Roofline Roundup

In previous columns I have looked at roofline being the next big thing and how more window companies are adding roofline installations to their services.

Once you have decided to diversify into installing roofline alongside your existing window installation business and chosen your roofline stockist, you need to let potential and previous customers know about your new service. Those who have already replaced their high maintenance windows with low maintenance PVC-U windows may also be thinking about doing the same with their roofline.

Because you are offering homeowners a new service you cannot rely on word of mouth recommendations alone. There are many ways in which you can advertise your new service to potential customers. Here are just three suggestions.

• The most traditional form of advertising is to place a newspaper advert. This type of advertising will reach a large audience – the latest figures from the Marketing Pocket book 2006 show that 50% of the population read a weekly newspaper. Newspaper adverts work best in local newspapers where your business is already established. It is a good idea to place a series of adverts so your company becomes familiar with readers - homeowners who are not thinking of replacing their roofline now may think about it in the future. If your local newspaper has a business section you may find that they will put in an editorial article alongside your advert if you are willing to pay more money.

• The latest figures show that 33% of the population use the internet everyday. Homeowners are increasingly using the internet to research their next home improvement project and the internet is an ideal way of advertising. Adverts can be placed with online directories in your area as well as being put on community websites.

• Leaflet drops are also an effective way of attracting new business. The best way to target homeowners via this method is through posted leaflet drops. These leaflets allow homeowners to request more information or request a visit from your company and can be kept until the homeowner decides to have the work done.

Homeowners will see business adverts everyday. Whatever medium you choose your advert will need to stand out from the crowd - it is worth taking time to think about the type of advert that will work best for your company. You need to think about how you are different from other companies and what you can offer homeowners.

Advertising your new service will cost money, but remember, what you spend on advertising will be returned in new business.
