Roofline -
Access All Areas
Health and Safety legislation has moved on: the
days when ladders were used for all but the most difficult
roofline job are gone. Now, scaffolding or a working platform
system is essential for most roofline projects. There are many
alternatives available for roofline installers including
traditional scaffolding and ladders, but what’s important is a
risk assessment so you’re using the right tool for each job.
Since the Working at Height Regulations 2005
have been put into action, several companies have developed
equipment that clamps and stabilizes ladders and stepladders
so that they can be safely used and meet safety standards. For
example, Ladder Safety Supplies provides a range of products
that secure a ladder so it’s suitable for a job – the Ladder
Staging System high level work platform access in less than
six minutes gives safe using upright ladders and an aluminium
staging board.
Access equipment specialists T.B.Davies (Cardiff) also supply
a range of innovative combination ladders for professional
use. Innovative safety features include a telescopic
stabiliser bar, which provides an integrated wide base so you
can work safely on sloping and uneven surfaces.
Another access product that’s increasingly
popular is the working platform system. It’s designed for its
function - meeting health and safety guidelines and giving
optimum access.
Installers benefit from control over the equipment. You can
put up a working platform, finish a job and remove the
platform all in one day. There’s no need to rely on – and pay
- others to erect and remove scaffolding. This also gives the
homeowner more security as the access equipment can be removed
each evening.
As a supplier of working platform systems, Easi-Dec
Access Systems Ltd’s Sales and Marketing Director, Peter
Buzzle, comments: “To overcome building obstructions, the Easi-Dec
roofline access equipment has been designed so that it can go
around corners, to narrow areas, dormer windows and over
porches. We aim to make roofline installers safe and make
access simple. And because it’s easy to remove you rarely need
Local Authority approval for domestic jobs.”
“Easi-Dec gives you complete control over
nearly every job.” Peter continues, “You can assemble it in 20
minutes for eight metres of access and it’s easy to
transport.”
Working platform systems aren’t necessarily the first thought
when considering a roofline job but they are an option. Falls
from height are still the most common type of accident
resulting in fatal injuries, according to the UK Health and
Safety Executive. And even falls from relatively modest
heights can still cause serious injuries. The most important
aspect of any job is to think about the project and what it
involves, look at the options available and make the safest
access equipment choice.
